This page covers the installation and setup of the Hoffman Super Safety-AR22 including the weight carrier and trip to ensure smooth operation in your AR22 rifle.
Weight Carrier Installation
Purpose: The weight carrier helps the bolt cycle properly, especially with different barrel lengths and ammo types.
Determine Weight Needs:
For barrels longer than 8", you’ll likely need 1oz or more of weight.
For barrels shorter than 8" or when using low-powered ammo (standard or subsonic), you may need less weight or none at all. Experiment to find the right setup.
Install the Weight Carrier:
Insert the weight carrier into the bolt carrier group (BCG) from right to left.
You may need to depress the firing pin to slide the weight past it.
Ensure the weight carrier locks securely into the retainer notch at the rear of the BCG.
Test the Bolt:
Hand-cycle the bolt on the BCG’s metal frame to confirm it moves smoothly and easily.
AR22 Trip Installation
Purpose: The trip connects the bolt to the safety system for proper operation.
Steps:
Flip the upper receiver upside down.
Partially pull the AR22 bolt carrier group (BCG) out of the receiver until the raised rear of the part of the bolt body is exposed.
Place the trip on top of the BCG, positioning the front of the trip over the raised part of the bolt body.
Push the BCG with the trip back into the upper receiver.
Plastic Levers
Purpose: Plastic levers are made or sold by some retailers for AR22s because they fit more tightly and have less play than steel levers. AR22 bolts have shorter travel than standard AR15 BCGs, making them sensitive to loose levers, which may prevent the safety from switching properly from “Active Safe” to “Fire” when the bolt closes. Plastic levers may or may not be required in order to function properly in your firearm
Key Tips:
When closing the upper and lower receivers, ensure the plastic lever is inside the pocket of the trip (not in front or behind it).
Caution: Closing the receivers with the lever outside the trip’s pocket can damage the plastic lever. Double-check alignment before closing. The bolt will not cycle properly withthe lever outside of its correct position inside the trip.
Troubleshooting Tips
If the safety doesn’t switch from “Active Safe” to “Fire” when the bolt closes, the lever may have too much play. Switch to the included plastic lever or shim the steel lever to reduce the amount of play.
If the bolt doesn’t cycle smoothly, verify the weight carrier is secure and the weights are properly installed.
If the plastic lever is damaged, ensure it’s correctly positioned in the trip’s pocket during receiver assembly.
By following these steps and using the ammo preferred by your firearm, your HSS-AR22 should function reliably.
